As Women’s Day approaches on Saturday, 9 August 2025, we’re celebrating the strength, skill and achievements of women across South Africa. In the world of poker, often seen as a male-dominated space, a powerful new voice is emerging. Her name is Tanith Rothman. Her story is real, raw and nothing short of remarkable.
From Monday-night home games in Cape Town to the bright lights of Las Vegas, Tanith’s journey is about far more than just cards. It’s about resilience, curiosity and finding your fire in the most unexpected places.
From a Tough Start to Monday Night Magic
“It was 2009 and I was in a really dark place,” Tanith recalls. Her friends, trying to help lift her spirits, invited her to their weekly poker game. "At first, it was just the guys playing. Then they said, 'Come join.' I didn’t even know what poker was."
It was a R50 buy-in game. After a few weeks, something started clicking. "I bought a poker book, watched some old CDs, and suddenly, I was winning. I cleaned up five Mondays in a row! That’s when I knew this wasn’t just a distraction—this was something I could grow into."
What began as a lifeline quickly turned into a passion. Poker became the outlet Tanith never knew she needed.
The Long Grind and First Glimpse of Glory
With limited resources but unlimited drive, Tanith entered a free poker league, playing for points and experience. That effort led to her first-ever bracelet. It was plastic, but priceless.
To fast-track her learning, she even worked as a "prop" for a poker site—joining online tables and staying on until real players filled them.
"It was a grind, but it taught me the ups, the downs, the rhythm of the game."
Two years in, she was entering local club games, and then national tournaments like the World Poker Tour events at Emperors Palace. She played satellites to secure Main Event seats, stretching her bankroll with precision.
After taking a short break from poker in 2020, Tanith returned with fresh perspective and new goals. "I went all-in on studying the game and getting better. And in 2025, it all came together."
From Cape Town to the WSOP Final Table
Vegas. The dream of every poker player. For Tanith, it was more than a destination—it was a test.
Her first big step: the $600 Ladies Tournament at the Venetian. The field included names she recognized from television. Intimidating? Absolutely. But Tanith held her own. Her next tournament, at the Aria, brought unexpected challenges, including uncomfortable table dynamics. Still, she stayed focused. The very next day was the World Series of Poker Ladies Event.
"My only goal was to make it through the day," she said. Level by level, break by break, she pushed forward.
By Day 3, she had made the final table, ultimately finishing 8th."That moment was everything. I was proud, shocked, grateful. It proved to me that I belonged."
A few days later, she cashed out of the Summer Festival with nearly $40,000—enough to enter the prestigious $10,000 WSOP Main Event. The dream wasn’t just alive; it was unfolding, step by thrilling step.
Each step taken eventually led her to placing 1063rd out of a pool of 9735 players and cashing out $17,500.00. Not a bad run at all!
Her Advice to Women at the Table
Tanith’s message to aspiring players is clear: take care of your bankroll. "Don’t play with your rent money. Start where it makes sense for you. There are free leagues, online resources, and ways to grow slowly. That’s how you win."
She also credits her partner, Steven, for helping manage the practical side of the journey. "Having someone to believe in you, to handle the admin so you can focus on the game—that makes a huge difference."
A New Chapter for Women in Poker
Tanith Rothman isn’t just making waves. She’s paving a path. Her story shows that poker isn’t just about bravado or luck. It’s about strategy, preparation, and confidence.
As we approach Women’s Day, her journey stands as a reminder: women belong at the poker table, not just as participants but as champions.
